Mr. Heilberg has more than 32 years of experience frequently handling bench and jury trials. He received his JD from Washington & Lee University, where he now teaches trial advocacy as adjunct faculty. He has taught at continuing legal education seminars, college and law school. He started his private law practice in Charlottesville in 1982 after prosecuting in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County following his law school graduation in 1979. Mr. Heilberg is the 2011 President of the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Practice areas include adult and juvenile (Virginia and Federal) Criminal; Capital Murder; DUI; traffic; Personal Injury; Social Security Disability; Professional Malpractice; Civil trials and appeals.

Mr. Heilberg handles criminal trials, civil trials and appeals in both the state and federal courts in an area of roughly 60 miles in every direction around Charlottesville throughout Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Mr. Heilberg has tried more than 100 cases to juries, including capital murder charges. He is a member of the National and Virginia Associations of Criminal Defense Lawyers (VACDL), the Virginia Bar, the Virginia Trial Lawyer's Association and is a member of the Charlottesville - Albemarle Criminal (President, 1992-1993) and general Bar Associations. Mr. Heilberg has been a Board Member (2006 to present), Treasurer (2007 and 2008), Vice-President (2009) and President-Elect (2010) for the VACDL.
